A high-quality, pure pigment range made right here in Australia, Matisse Acrylic Paints offer outstanding intensity and long-lasting colours, as well as a variety of painting mediums to enhance your painting technique while allowing your creativity to flow.
But with multiple paint formulas available, and a number of mediums, gels, and primers to choose from, deciding which Matisse paints are suited to your needs can be a challenge.
Here are some things to know before getting started with Matisse Acrylic Paint.
What is the Difference Between the Matisse Formulas?
As we’ve mentioned earlier, Matisse offer multiple paint formulas to suit a range of different uses and techniques. We’d like to introduce you to the three formulas we offer here at Riot Art & Craft.
Matisse Structure Acrylic Paints
A rich, heavy-bodied paint that’s perfect for application with a brush or palette knife, Matisse Structure Acrylics allow you to achieve strikingly textured effects. This makes it ideal for impasto techniques.
Currently boasting 95 colours in the Matisse Structure range, these paints are made from the finest quality pigments and ingredients, offer superior lightfastness, and are of archival quality.
Matisse Flow Acrylic Paints
Featuring all the premium attributes of the Structure Acrylic range but with a thinner viscosity, Matisse Flow Acrylic Paints allow for free-flowing brush strokes and fine detail work. This paint can even be applied with an airbrush with only a small amount of dilution!
With a low-sheen finish and good levelling, this premium acrylic paint is well suited to canvas painting, hard edge painting techniques, photo-realism, portraiture, murals, and any other work that requires smooth colours. With the right application, it can even be used to simulate watercolour techniques!
A highly versatile paint that’s compatible with all Matisse Mediums and Matisse Background Colours, Matisse Flow Acrylic Paints come in 95 different colours, including metallics.
Matisse Background Colours
A highly pigmented, low-tooth gesso, Matisse Background Colours are designed to give your artwork the strong foundations it needs to look its best.
Specifically designed for canvas and canvas board, this versatile formula can actually be applied to almost any surface, including wood, walls, ceilings, and more! Offering fantastic coverage and an excellent surface to paint on, Background Colours also feature a built-in sealer to seal porous surfaces, which might be why they’ve become so popular in interior design. Even though they’re designed to be used as a coloured gesso, Matisse Background Colours can still be used in designed painting, stencil-work, and decorative wall and roof painting.
Matisse Background Colours can easily be applied with a brush or roller, drying to a matte-velvet finish.
Matisse Acrylics for Beginners
If you’re just starting out with Matisse Acrylics, we understand that it can be hard to decide what to start with. For beginners, we recommend kicking off your painting journey with an acrylic paint set!
Matisse offers a range of acrylic paint sets that they’ve conveniently broken up into colour ranges. For example, the Matisse Daintree Forest Set, which features a variety of gorgeous shades of green, would be particularly well-suited to lush, forest backgrounds. The Australian Colours Structure Paint Set or the Australian Colours Flow Paint Set, on the other hand, would be best suited to the unique natural beauty of Australian landscapes. If you’re interested in portraiture, we recommend the Matisse Portrait Colours Set.
For first-time painters an introductory set will give you everything you need to experiment with mixing and paint application. Matisse offers an Intro Set in both the Structure and Flow range, so you’ll need to decide which paint viscosity is most suited to you.
